California Attorney General

The California state office that sued ExxonMobil in 2024 over its plastics-recycling claims, and was later sued by ExxonMobil in response.

In September 2024, California’s Attorney General, along with several environmental organisations, sued ExxonMobil, alleging the company misled the public about the recyclability of plastics and the effectiveness of its “advanced recycling” technology. ExxonMobil subsequently sued the Attorney General, alongside those environmental groups and the Intergenerational Environment Justice Fund, for defamation. In February 2026, a US federal court allowed the claim against the Attorney General to continue while dismissing the claims against the fund and the other environmental groups on jurisdictional grounds.
