Case
California v. ExxonMobil
California's Attorney General and environmental organisations sued ExxonMobil over its plastics-recyclability claims; the case that led to ExxonMobil's countersuit.
In September 2024, California’s Attorney General and several environmental organisations sued ExxonMobil, alleging the company misled the public about the recyclability of plastics and the effectiveness of its “advanced recycling” technology. ExxonMobil disputed this characterisation and responded with its own defamation suit — naming the Attorney General, the environmental groups, and the Intergenerational Environment Justice Fund as defendants (see the related ExxonMobil v. Bonta case).
The Intergenerational Environment Justice Fund is not a party to this case, but it is the context for the fund’s involvement in the ExxonMobil countersuit. As of the February 2026 dismissal of ExxonMobil’s claims against the fund, this underlying California litigation was reported as still ongoing.
